As to the chemical absorption of acidic gas with MEA, MDEA and PZ we observed different results from commercial simulation packages.

An accurate thermodynamic and kinetic characterization of CO2 and H2S as well as of impurities like aromatics, mercaptans, COS has been performed.

By developing adequate thermodynamic/kinetic/mass transfer models according to a multiphysics approach, ad hoc subroutines have been written and linked to a commercial simulation software.

A reliable tool for plant simulation has been obtained.

The process is energy intensive: in coal-fired power plants, the energy consumption in the reboiler of the regeneration section is estimated to be 15–30% of the net power production of the plant.

Different schemes for reducing the high energy requirement of the stripping unit have been studied.

The high pressure liquid flowing from the upper zone of the multipressure column enters the lower zone; it undergoes partial vaporization without the need of a corresponding duty from the reboiler.

Carbon dioxide is recovered from the head of the column at higher concentration and higher pressure.
