Capture and utilization of CO₂ produced by the Como waste-to-energy plant
In March 2021, Acinque and GASP launched a collaboration to develop a highly innovative experimental project aimed at removing 50% of the CO2 emitted in the flue gases of the Como waste-to-energy plant, thus making waste a zero-emissions energy source.
To date, only a few waste-to-energy plants worldwide are equipped with CO2 capture systems; among these are the Oslo waste-to-energy plant (Norway), Saga City (Japan), and Twence (the Netherlands).
In its initial phase, the project includes:
– the study and simulation of a system for capturing 50% of the CO2 emitted from the flue gases of the Acinque Ambiente waste-to-energy plant
– the estimation of the energy impact of the system, with an expected steam consumption of 1.44 tons per ton of CO2 captured
– the minimization of environmental impact and the analysis of potential uses of the captured CO2
– the development of a pilot plant capable of processing 2.5 tons per hour of flue gas, corresponding to 2500 tons of CO2 per year.
